Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 1st meeting of the Education Rebuilding Council at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The meeting was participated in by the full council of Mr. Ryoji Noyori, the chairman of the council, Mr. Morio Ikeda, the acting chairman, and 15 other intellectuals.

In his address, Prime Minister Abe identified the major ultimate objective of rebuilding education as being to guarantee that all children have the opportunity to acquire a high academic ability and sense of discipline. He said to fulfill this objective, it is important to rebuild public education, as well as the educational function of families and communities. Specifically, he pointed out the following as three issues for deliberation: measures to provide high quality education and seek the improvement of academic abilities; measures for the "creation of beautiful people" who have developed a sense of discipline and sound sentiment; and measures to rebuild education that involves the entire community, aiming to enhance the educational function of families and communities so that everyone can cherish their family and the community that nurtured them.

Prime Minister Abe further requested that the council deliberate on fundamental policies to rebuild education from a broad perspective in order to create an educational system commensurate to a Japan of the 21st century and to realize the creation of a beautiful country.
