[Provisional Translation]

On September 4, 2020, the Prime Minister held a Ministerial Meeting on Typhoon No. 10* at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Typhoon No.10 is expected to strengthen into one that reaches an emergency warning level, approach and make landfall from the Okinawa region to the Kyushu regions from the night of September 5 through to September 7. There is also expected to be record-breaking heavy rains, strong winds, high waves and storm surges in the regions where the typhoon will pass.

To respond to various emergencies, police, firefighters, and the Japan Coast Guard are on high alert and approximately 22,000 personnel of the Self-Defense Forces, mainly from the units based in the Kyushu and Okinawa regions, are on stadnbay for rapid deployment.

I ask everyone, in particular the Minister of State for Disaster Management, to ensure the prompt dissemination of information that is easy to understand to all citizens, and put in place necessary measures ahead of time before disaster strikes, collaborating closely with local governments and relevant organizations. I also ask you to secure a sufficient number of evacuation centers in each area, as well as to put in place the necessary structures, giving sufficient consideration also to measures to counter the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

There is a possibility of record-setting heavy rains, windstorms, high waves and high tides. We ask the public to move forward in making advance preprations, including by confirming contingency supplies and evacuation routes.  In addition to refraining from going outside for nonessential and non-urgent reasons, the public should remain vigilant and take actions that will save lives, including staying mindful of the importance of early evacuation, in keeping with evacuation information from the local authorities."
