On April 7, 2020, the Prime Minister attended a Policy Roundtable of the Government and Ruling Parties at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the participants held discussions on economic measures and the supplementary budget for FY2020.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Regarding the emergency economic measures in response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), through the ruling parties’ intensive consideration, we have been able to compile a powerful policy package, today, that is commensurate with the great magnitude of the impacts of the disease.

We will fully mobilize all possible measures, including bold fiscal, monetary and tax measures, without being constrained by past practices, with the ultimate goal being to protect the lives and lifestyles of the public.

With unprecedentedly strong liquidity support; the system to boldly defer the payments of national taxes and social security premiums with a scale of 26 trillion yen, the first ever in Japan; and over 6 trillion yen of cash payments; among other measures, the economic measures reach an unprecedented scale of 39 trillion yen in fiscal expenditure, or a 108 trillion yen program equivalent to 20% of gross domestic product (GDP).

I would like to ask for the full cooperation of the ruling parties in implementing these new economic measures.”
