[Provisional Translation]

On December 19, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 14th meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy in 2019 at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, a discussion was held on the revision of the reform time schedule for the New Plan to Advance Economic and Fiscal Revitalization and the FY2020 economic outlook.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Today, we first finalized the 2019 reform time schedule for the New Plan to Advance Economic and Fiscal Revitalization. There can be no fiscal consolidation without economic revitalization. I would like Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy Nishimura to take the lead in the Integrated Economic and Fiscal Reforms, and continue to strongly promote these reforms following this reform time schedule as a guiding post.

I also ask the relevant ministers to continue ongoing efforts to accelerate and expand a series of efforts such as nation-wide implementation of the visualization of reforms and advanced or best practices, following this reform time schedule.

This year marks the beginning of the Reiwa Era, and next year will see the long-awaited Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We will advance a new nation-building effort in the atmosphere brimming with dynamism towards the new era. To that end, we need to exert further efforts to not only implement the comprehensive economic measures steadily, but also materialize a society where people can enjoy more peace of mind and sustainable economic growth.

I ask the members here to hold even more lively discussions next year at the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, to usher such policy management of the Abe Cabinet.

Allow me to once more thank you for your intensive deliberations over this past year, and ask for your cooperation next year.”
