[Provisional Translation]

On November 29, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the seventh meeting of the Council for Combating Childhood Poverty at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, a discussion was held on the draft Outline on Measures to Reduce Childhood Poverty.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“We have just compiled a new Outline on Measures to Reduce Childhood Poverty. It is the basic policy of the Abe Cabinet to create a society in which all children can pursue their dreams.

Until now, I myself have taken the lead in expanding various measures to support them, such as making early childhood education and childcare free, and by making higher education for those children truly in need free of charge.

Measures to reduce childhood poverty are an investment in children, who will bear the future. We will continue to strongly advance the measures that are based on this outline, without letting up on these efforts.

I ask the relevant ministers to continue to carefully review and evaluate the state of the implementation of these measures and other matters, and work as one to reduce childhood poverty.”
