[Provisional Translation]

On November 8, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the second planning meeting on a social security system oriented to all generations at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, a hearing with experts was conducted.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Today, we held the first hearing with experts.

The social security reform to one that is oriented to all generations is the most important challenge of the Abe Cabinet. We must carry out reforms to create a social security system in which all generations can enjoy peace of mind, from children to the elderly, amidst the declining birthrate and aging society, as well as the diversification of lifestyles.

Today, we asked Mr. Mikami, Ms. Ishiyama, Ms. Mera, and Ms. Takeda about their respective and diverse views from the perspective of young people and women. We have also heard the views of medical practitioners, such as the representatives of the Japan Medical Association, the Japan Dental Association, and the Japan Pharmaceutical Association, which are shouldering a vital part of the social security system.

I would like Minister in charge of Social Security Reform Nishimura and the relevant ministers, including Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Kato, to further advance reviews towards the compilation of the interim report by the end of the year, while fully taking into account the valuable comments provided today.”
