On July 3, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting of the Ministerial Meeting on the Heavy Rain from the End of June at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minster said,

“The strong seasonal rain front has remained stationary and is bringing record-breaking precipitation in the Kyushu region. We have seen damages to housing.

From now until tomorrow, there is expected to be heavy rain in Kyushu and its surrounding areas, which may surpass the average precipitation of the whole month of July. As there is a risk of landslide, rising of rivers, and flooding, we need to be even more vigilant.

I ask you to work closely with local governments and relevant organizations and put in place all possible measures, such as the dissemination of easy-to-understand information that will lead to evacuations in a timely manner, with the Government working as one.

I also ask the people of Japan to stay alert and take necessary steps in advance that save lives, such as following the evacuation advisory to be issued by local governments.

Currently, police, firefighters, and the Japan Coast Guard are on high alert and approximately 14,000 initial response personnel of the Self-Defense Forces, mainly from the units based in the Kyushu region, are ready for rapid deployment so as to respond to various emergencies. I ask you to remain fully vigilant.”
