[Provisional Translation]

On June 21, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting of the Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, a discussion was held on the Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2019.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Today, we approved the Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2019.

Due to the rapid progress of globalization and digitalization, the flow and circulation of information has been significantly expanding both in terms of speed and scale. In such a time, the importance of the utilization and protection of intellectual properties continues to grow further.

Today, the expert members gave us valuable comments on the direction of our intellectual property policies in the new era of Reiwa, such as the necessity of Japan’s leadership to create an environment to increase the added value of data, which we should call the oil of the 21st century, as well as the importance of human resources to constantly create intellectual properties that meet the needs of the new era.

I ask the relevant ministers to implement swiftly the policies included in the Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2019, taking into consideration these views of the expert members.”
