On June 14, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence.

With respect to the summit telephone talk with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, the Prime Minister said,

“Just a while ago, I exchanged views with President Trump regarding the situation in the Middle East, following my recent visit to Iran.

On that occasion, President Trump expressed his appreciation for my visit and approach to Iran. Moving forward, I intend to continue to cooperate closely with President Trump and the United States.

The roads to ease tensions come with great difficulties, due to national sentiments on both sides and other issues. Nevertheless, we will continue our efforts, closely collaborating with the international community, for the peace and stability of the region, as well as the peace and prosperity of the world.

With regard to the attacks on the ship in the Strait of Hormuz, Japan firmly condemns such attacks which threaten the safety of ships, no matter who conducted these attacks.

In addition to that, all the relevant countries should exercise restraint to prevent unexpected consequences and refrain from any action that could escalate tensions. Moving forward, Japan intends to exert every possible effort to fulfill its role.”
