On May 6, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence.

With respect to the summit telephone talk with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, the Prime Minister said,

“I held a talk with President Trump over the phone. Regarding the latest development in the issue of North Korea, including the recent incident, we exchanged views and analyzed the situation. We also closely aligned our future responses.

At last year’s U.S.-North Korea Summit Meeting, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-Un signed an agreement on the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. President Trump and I fully shared the view that we will aim for the swift implementation of this U.S.-North Korea agreement.

Regarding our future responses against North Korea, President Trump and I completely share the view on every aspect and we also had a fully aligned view that Japan and the U.S. will continue to work together and respond to the situation completely in sync. Moreover, regarding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, through a series of summit meetings, I also share the view with President Putin of Russia as well as President Xi of China.

Going forward, Japan intends to continue to play a active role for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula as well as the peace and stability of this region, including the situation in North Korea, in cooperation with the international community.

With respect to the projectiles, Japanese and U.S. experts will cooperate in analyzing the situation. In connection with North Korea, the important issue for Japan is the abductions issue. In order to resolve this abductions issue, we should not miss out any single opportunity and I, myself, have to meet face-to-face with Chairman Kim Jong-Un, and meet with him without attaching any conditions. I intend to work to resolve this issue, with the determination that we will not miss out any single opportunity.”
