On April 11, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press occasion at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Regarding the replacement of the Minister for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Prime Minister said,

“I would like to assign the post to Shunichi Suzuki, who has extensive experiences serving as the Minister of the Environment and Minister for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics Games.

I would like Mr. Suzuki, who is from Iwate in the disaster region and strongly committed to the “Recovery and Reconstruction Games,” to restore trust and lead the way to a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Taking this opportunity, I intend that all the Ministers reaffirm the recognition that they are all a Minister for Reconstruction and the Cabinet works as one and exerts every effort for the reconstruction of Tohoku.”

“With respect to this consequence, each Cabinet member must further brace ourselves and straighten up. We must also seriously accept that we are facing a variety of criticism.

We would like to fulfill the mandate that has been given to us by the public through the Cabinet as a whole working together to restore trust and exerting all-out efforts towards reconstruction.”
