On March 31, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the Tokyo National Museum, where he viewed a special exhibition, “The 30th Anniversary of the Enthronement Cultural Exchanges of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress: Sharing the Beauty of Japan.”

After viewing the exhibition, the Prime Minister said,

“I saw a series of wonderful artwork while thinking of the profound significance of the cultural exchanges which have been done by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress over many years. I was deeply moved, and once again recognize the beauty and depth of the art and culture of Japan. I hope to pave the way for a new era for Japan, building on the traditional culture that we have upheld to this point.

Regarding the new era name, I intend to make a decision while listening to the views of a variety of people.”
