On June 4, 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Regarding disciplinary measures in response to the falsification of documents by the Ministry of Finance, the Prime Minister said,

“Government documents must not be falsified. I am acutely aware of my responsibilities in this matter as the head of the Government. We will thoroughly reconsider the way that documents are handled and implement preventive measures to ensure that such an incident never happens ever again.

I want Deputy Prime Minister Aso to lead these efforts, and to carry out and fulfill such responsibilities.”

Furthermore, the Prime Minister said,
“By its very definition, political responsibility implies that we should thoroughly implement measures to ensure that this never happens again.”
