[Provisional Translation]

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a ceremony to present the People’s Honor Award at the Prime Minister’s Office to Ms. Kaori Icho, and bestowed her with the certificate of award, the shield and a commemorative gift.

This People’s Honor Award recognizes Ms. Kaori Icho for her remarkable achievements that gave great inspiration and courage to all in Japan, as well as bright hope. At the most recent Olympic Games, she exerted extra effort and underwent sustained and intensive training to win the gold medal without giving up. Her achievement marks the first time in history that a woman has won individual-event gold medals in four straight Olympic Games.

The People’s Honor Award was established in August 1977 to honor those individuals, respected by a broad spectrum of the people, whose distinguished accomplishments have brought the light of hope to society.
