Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted an Iftar with the Islamic Diplomatic Corps in Japan at the Prime Minister’s Office.

In his opening address, the Prime Minister said,

“Assalam alaikum. Today I am delighted to be able to hold this Iftar for members of the Islamic Diplomatic Corps in Japan and assembled guests.

Since becoming Prime Minister I have made a total of five visits to the Middle East, which demonstrates the importance that I place on the region and how much I value friendly relations between Japan and Middle East countries.

Japan and Islamic countries share the same spirit that can be found in the Arabic adage, ‘Khair Al-Umuri Ausatoha’ or ‘the best way is in the middle.’ Respect for traditions, esteem for moderation, and wisdom that brings about harmony lie at the roots of both our cultures.

Today, in addition to members of the Islamic Diplomatic Corps, I have invited guests who have a close connection to Islamic countries, including those who have devoted themselves to parliamentary exchange through the activities of the parliamentarians’ friendship league.

Today Diet members from all parliamentary parties are in attendance. With the election campaign for the House of Councillors having already effectively begun, all members are preparing themselves for a fierce election battle, but for this evening we have been able to establish a temporary truce.

It is thanks to the efforts of all the people present that Japan and Islamic countries today share such excellent relations. I would like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to you all and also request your continued efforts to ensure that relations develop further.

I would like to close my remarks with the wish that the time we spend together this evening provides an excellent opportunity to further deepen our relations of friendship and cooperation.”
