Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a Special Award Ceremony for the Special Guard of Honor at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Prime Minister said in his address,

“I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to the Special Guard of Honor for receiving this Special Award. You truly work in unison, your appearance is constantly impeccable, and the ceremonies you perform are always of the highest standard. You splendidly embody the spirit that the troop has had ever since its establishment.

I would like to express my deep respect for every single member of the Special Guard of Honor throughout the history of its existence, who have built it up over the years.

The history of the Special Guard of Honor began fourteen years after the end of the war, along with Japan’s complete return to the international community. In conjunction with Japan’s membership in the United Nations, and following consultations among the Government, a Cabinet decision was made in August 1957 determining that the Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF) would carry out the role of Special Guard of Honor. During the 58 years since then, the Special Guard of Honor has steadfastly performed ceremonies for over 1,000 guests from over 100 countries.

The ceremonies conducted by the Special Guard of Honor, an elite troop, are an expression of Japan’s utmost respect for our guests. With the attention of not only Japan but the entire world focused on you, and under tense conditions in which failure is unacceptable, you have always lived up to expectations and represented Japan with honor and a great sense of responsibility.

During this time, through tireless training you have continued to refine your skills, ensuring that the movements of each member of the troop are matched to the smallest detail, and that your movements, posture, and timing are world-class.

Furthermore, in regard to performances of various nations’ national anthems, not only do you analyze the lyrics and musical composition of each particular national anthem, but, recognizing that a national anthem is the greatest possible expression of respect for that country, you also thoroughly research the historical background of the establishment of national anthems, and always endeavor to attain the highest level of performance.

Moreover, through your performances that express this utmost respect, you have contributed to strengthening the relationships of trust between Japan and the leaders of many different countries.

Since I became Prime Minister, I have seen the guards of honor of many countries. As a result, I can say with certainty that Japan’s Special Guard of Honor is the best in the world. You are clearly showing to the world just how elite and highly skilled the Japan SDF is. As the Commander-in-Chief of the SDF, you are a great source of trust and pride to me.

I have high hopes that today’s award will fill you with confidence and pride, and encourage you to aim ever higher.”
