Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the seventh meeting of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, discussion was held on the Evaluation for the R&D projects of National Importance, the Formulation of Budgets related to Science and Technology in FY2015, and the second allocation in FY2014 of Coordination Funds for Medical Research and Development.
Based on the discussion in the meeting, the Prime Minister said,
“Today we have decided the Basic Policy for Formulating Science and Technology-related Budgets for FY2015. By doing so, we have indicated our basic policy for the prioritization of measures.
In regard to the K computer, there was once discussion of suspending its research and development. Today, however, we have now evaluated the post-K computer development, and preparations for a full-fledged start have been made. Maintaining a strong resolve, I would like us to aim to be the best in the world.
Fully taking into account today’s decision, I now intend to carry out the formulation of the budget for next year, and to realize the items contained therein as important measures of the Abe Cabinet.
This year we must accelerate the implementation of our growth strategy even more strongly. By formulating the next Science and Technology Basic Plan, I would like us to utilize science and technology to envision the kind of future that we should aim for, as well as the path we must follow in order to achieve that.
I request that you hold intensive deliberations in order to compile an interim plan by this summer. Thank you.”
