Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from H.E. Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Prime Minister said in his address,

“I hope the 2014 UNESCO World Conference on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) will be a success, and that ESD will be solidly promoted even after the United Nation’s Decade of ESD comes to an end. The Government of Japan intends to continue to cooperate with UNESCO.

Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When I visited Tomioka Silk Mill recently many tourists were visiting, and I was again reminded of the significance of recognition as a World Heritage Site.

In addition, where Japanese paper is concerned, it is being utilized everywhere in this Office. I welcome the recommendation of Japanese paper for inscription as an intangible cultural asset.”
