First Day of the Prime Minister’s Visit to Australia

On July 8 (local time), during his visit to Canberra, Australia, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe first visited the Australian War Memorial where he laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Afterwards, the Prime Minister attended a welcome ceremony at the Parliament of Australia during which he conversed with the leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives and delivered an address to both chambers of Parliament.
Prime Minister Abe then paid a courtesy call on H.E. General the Hon. Sir Peter Cosgrove, Governor-General of Australia, and Mrs. Cosgrove, before attending a welcome lunch hosted by the Japan-Australia business community.
In the afternoon, Prime Minister Abe met with the Hon. Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia. The Prime Minister then held signing ceremonies for the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Agreement concerning the Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology, and held a joint press conference. Following this, Prime Minister Abe conversed with members of the Cabinet of Australia, visited Australian National University, attended a reception with members of the business community, and received a courtesy call from the Hon. Bill Shorten MP, the leader of the Australian Labor Party. In the evening, Prime Minister Abe attended a banquet hosted by Prime Minister Abbott.
