Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the opening ceremony of Toranomon Hills.
The Prime Minister said in his address,
“Allow me to extend my sincere congratulations to you all today on the opening of Toranomon Hills.
Tokyo is aiming to become the greatest city in the world. The creation of this new landmark represents just such a determination, and I would like to celebrate its birth here with you.
While visiting Paris last month, I walked down the Champs Elysees for just a few minutes during a break between engagements. The spacious sidewalks are lined with cafés. The Parisian streets, with their cultured atmosphere and plenty of spaces for relaxation, impressed upon me a sense of stateliness.
Wide sidewalks are also being created along Shintora-dori which extends from Toranomon Hills to Shimbashi. I have no doubt that large numbers of people will frequent the area, as they do the Champs Elysees, and it will come to be a new area that demonstrates the charms of Tokyo to the rest of the world.
The other day I also visited an integrated resort in Singapore.
The resort not only has business facilities, but also a casino, pools, and even dolphins. It was clear to me that rather than settling for conventional ways of thinking, Singapore is constantly striving to take on new challenges. I could feel the country’s passion and determination to continue to grow.
We find ourselves in an age where the cities of the world are competing to out-charm each other. Tokyo must also continually take on new challenges. In this regard, I believe that Toranomon Hills, which not only functions as a business base, but also boasts residential space in the heart of the city, an eco-friendly open lawn area, and an advanced level of disaster response capability, has addressed many of challenges that cities face. As such, I believe it provides the world with a new model for urban development.
The Government will also not shy away from challenges.
Loop Road No. 2 passes beneath this building. To carry out urban revitalization we have to abandon the conventional idea that our roads are purely public property.
In the Diet we have just amended the Road Act. This will free up new land on roads in prime locations in central Tokyo. I look forward to seeing the private sector make use of this opportunity and take on new challenges.
The National Strategic Special Zones project is also about to get underway. We will form a robust partnership with Governor Masuzoe and work together on the project.
In addition, former Prime Minister Mori is also here today, and Tokyo will be hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.
President Tsuji has also declared that over the next 10 years he will be investing one trillion yen in this immediate vicinity alone. I have a great deal of confidence in him. I would like those gathered here today to also make active investments.
This is not a matter of the public or private sector. Let us all work together to make Tokyo the greatest city in the world. It is my hope that the opening of Toranomon Hills today will serve as a wonderful first step towards this goal.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt respect for all those who have worked for many long years in the lead up to this opening ceremony today, and wish them all continued success and good health. With that I would like to conclude my remarks.
Congratulations once again on the opening of Toranomon Hills today.”
