Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 18th meeting of the Education Rebuilding Implementation Council at the Prime Minister's Office.
During the meeting, discussion took place on the future of the education system.
The Prime Minister said in his opening address,
“Today, as we have just heard from Chair Kamata, I would like to ask you to carry on from the previous meeting and discuss the education system according to the specific issues.
Last time, Chair Kamata outlined five specific issues related to the future of the education system.
Those specific issues are first, the ideal durations for compulsory education and tuition-free education; second, the delineation of different stages of education; third, higher education and vocational education; fourth, our ideal for teachers; and fifth, the setting of conditions, including fiscal measures.
The specific issues related to the education system are extremely wide-ranging. For that reason, I believe that it will be very significant for this Council to set its sights on the generations to come, proceed with discussion on these five issues, and identify the overall direction for the future.
Today, I would like you to carry on from the previous meeting and discuss the first specific issue. Following that, I would like you to discuss the second issue, the delineation of different stages of education. Each individual issue requires broad and deep discussion.
I request that all the members of this Council respectively utilize your valuable experiences and learning to consider these issues from a diverse perspective.”
