Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a congratulatory telephone call from the Prime Minister's Office to Olympic team member Mr. Yuzuru Hanyu, who won a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics.

During his congratulatory remarks, the Prime Minister said,

"Congratulations Mr. Hanyu. I expect that many Japanese people were deeply moved by your performance yesterday.
I too was watching with nervousness and excitement, and I was very impressed by the genuine composure you showed and the way you refused to give up all the way through your performance."
