Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Iwate Prefecture to gauge the progress of the reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

In the morning, the Prime Minister visited public housing for disaster-stricken households and emergency temporary housing in the Kaminakashima area, and received an on-site explanation from Mr. Takenori Noda, Mayor of Kamaishi City.

In the afternoon, at Kamaishi Police Station, the Prime Minister was presented with a book entitled Shimei (Duty), a compilation of notes written by police officers in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, from Ms. Toshie Tanaka, Chief of the Iwate Prefectural Police. The Prime Minister then offered flowers to police officers who lost their lives on duty, and offered words of encouragement to local police officers, police officers specially dispatched from other police stations, and volunteers. Afterwards, the Prime Minister visited Kamaishi Junior High School and received an explanation on the disaster management education provided at elementary and junior high schools and on the disaster management initiatives of local fire-fighting groups and other entities.
