Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 20th meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy at the Prime Minister's Office.

During the meeting, discussion took place on the "economic situation and other matters pertaining to the consumption tax increase decision."

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

"For the Abe administration, our issue of greatest priority is to overcome the deflation that has continued for over 15 years. I believe that we need to have the recognition that this is not a simple matter. And furthermore, it is important that we achieve both economic revitalization and fiscal soundness.
From the viewpoint of securing a path toward that, sufficiently taking into account the opinions received from this Council regarding the consumption tax increase decision, and based on the discussions with the ruling parties after this, I would like to make a final decision today. All of you gave your focused participation to the intensive review meetings. Thank you very much."
